This is a circumstance, which, whilst it shews the value of the island, affords no slight evidence of the resolution and firmness wherewith the restorations of the, eighth article of the Preliminary Treaty were insisted upon, in the course of the negotiation. With regard to the West Indies, one would think it impossible that any man, excepting a planter on the ceded island, should dare to complain. The Treaty, in re-t fpect to that quarter, is vastly more honourable than the Peace of Paris was at the close of the last war, though that was a war of conquest. The four next articles, which are relative to Africa, will not be found liable A R r t c L E IX, ' The King cf Great Britain shall cede and guaran"tee, in fall right, to his most Christian Majesty, the ' river liable to any material objections.
