He fully expected the Queen to pardon him; but she did not do so, and he was beheaded in the Tower. 8. Thereafter Elizabeth's life was far from happy. Disease added to old age--she was nearly seventy--threw her into melancholy.14 Some said that the death of Essex troubled her mind. She lay for days and nights on pillows on the floor, refusing to take" either food or medicine. At length she fell into a deep sleep, out of which she never awoke. She died in the forty-fifth year of her reign. With her ended the House of Tudor, and the crown passed to the House of Stewart. 9. Elizabeth was a learned as well as a clever woman. Like all the Tudors, she was strong-willed, and angry when opposed; but she tried to make England a great nation, and she succeeded.
