Therefore I would fain persuade our Deists, to look into the grounds and reasons of Christianity, before they pretend to find fault with it, or to censure or reject its beneficial and comfortable doctrines. Let them but observe the superstructure, and if all or any part of it, be not fitted to it, let them in God's name reject it. God's works are all of a piece of an ambitious set of men, who form schemes to aggrandize themselves; but it was founded in the wisdom and power and goodness of God; to discover his essential moral properties, and that the principles of natural religion, are so far from being weakened by revealed, that they are strengthened and assisted by it. Was christianity candidly try'd by this rule, it would appear consistent with perfect rectitude, and mostjudiciously modelled, to reduce this confused and distracted slate to order, by repairing the ruins of the moral world; by abolishing Strife and Envy, and establishing Harmony and Peace. The agreeable performance of which, would regulate the lives and manners of the tumultuous and rebellious, and bring the faithful to enjoy themselves, and their own property with safety. They will be in no fears fears or frightful apprehensions, from the violence of thieves or robbers, nor meet with any disturbance or molestation, from those beasts of prey, who plunder and ravage their fellow-creatures, and bite and devour one another. When this desireable work is accomplished, and the order of providence duly observed, fraud and injustice, malevolence and cruelty, naturally subside, and we who were the Children of disobedience, Jhall become Servants unto God, have our Fruit unto...
