The parishes to which the respective parties belonged are sometimes pointed out; "Esquire" and "Gentleman" are attached to the names of the local gentry, and in several instances the occupations of individuals arc added for their more complete identification. When the " Directory for Publiiiuc Worship" was enjoined due notices were inserted hi the lists of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials. "Here the Directory began "--" Here began the Directory to be put in operation "--and " Directory began," are inserted between the respective entries: so that no difficulty is experienced in ascertaining who had the services performed according to the old or the new regulations. On the 8th of June, 1045, the Rev. "Henry Morris, minister, 'interred "Issabell, the wife of Henry Watsonne, of Burnley, ' according to the established formularics of the Church of England, and on the 0th of the same month he was a zealous Puritan when interring "Anne, the daughter of Henry Smith, of Burnley," according to the dictates of the Parliamentary manual for the guidance of public devoticn. Dming the period of the Grcut Rebellion, the baneful iniluencc of internal commotions and the horrors of civil vvar. appear to have extended themselves to this locality." In the marriages at Burnley Church amount to twenty, but during the four following years the average is only thirteen;--in 1043 only eleven marriages take plaee: whilst the four succeeding yeers furnish an average of nearly twenty-one. The diminutoin in 1643 may probably be accounted for from the general levies of troops made during the latter part of 1012 and the commencement of 1043 in favor ...
