But this calm Pends but between two tempests, Jews and Meccans With the wild Bedouins are laying plots, How they may have my head to bear as trophy Of the return of lewd idolatry.--0 ye wild beasts Ye ravenous Meccan vultures Ye whores Ye thieves Ye cruel infanticides Ye skulking murderers Ye greedy robbers What is there short of death--ay, more than death, 1 suffered not beneath your savage talons? In meekness and forbearance I received The hell-forged missiles from your vicious hands, Till ye have pressed me to my nature's limits, Where it were shameful to prolong forbearance. When ye have struck me, who would soothe your wounds, I bore it for your sake, but to receive From marble hearts redoubled violence; Till it inflames my conscience to the quick.--What justice is in meekness, O just God?
