STATEMENT OF DR. J. W. SCHERESCHEWSKY, ASSISTANT SURGEON GENERAL, UNITED STATES PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE. The Chairman. Do you intend to produce some evidence differing from what you gave before the House Committee on Appropriations? Dr. Schereschewsky. We merely wish to reinforce some points. The Chairman. The committee, of course, will examine all the evidence taken before the House committee, so it is not necessary to go into as full particulars as you did over there, but we will be glad to hear whatever you have to say. Dr. Schereschewsky. There are three items. I do not know in what order you wish us to take them up. The Chairman. Take them up in your own way. Dr. Schereschewsky. The first item is a deficiency of $25,000 for biologic products. We have an appropriation for this year of $75,000, but we submitted an estimate for $100,000. This fund is entirely exhausted, and it will take at least $25,000 additional to continue the work throughout the fiscal year. This work is mandatory on the Public Health Service, and consists largely in the supervision and manufacture of what are known as biologic products, like serums, vaccines, toxins, and products for the cure and prevention of disease.
