Not illustrated. 1888 Excerpt: ...to the date of Mr. Judson's death, May 30, 1878, which, after deducting various small items conceded by claimants not to be due, makes the total amount claimed (principal and interest) $15,588.72. John W. Judson died at Oswego, N. Y., May 30, 1878. His heirs at law are the claimants. The item of $1,176 is claimed, to be due for the difference between the rate of compensation allowed. Mr. Judson as such agent for the period of seven hundred and eighty-four days, and that which he thought he was entitled to under agreement with Captain Smith, general superintendent of harbors on the south shore of Lake Ontario. Mr. Judson was allowed $-2 per day, and he claimed $3.50 per day, from August 9,1836, to September 30,1840, inclusive. From the papers in the case your committee find that the foregoing first claim was reported on by Major Turnbull, of the Topographical Engineers, on the 10th day of January, 1845, in whichjhe says: "It was evidently an oversight in rating Mr. Judson at $2," and concludes his report to the Chief Topographical Engineer by recommending the claim of Mr. Judson to his favorable consideration. The second item is composed of amount due for. third quarter, year 1850, $194; for mileage, $59; and services between July 1,1850, and March 1,1853, nine hundred, and thirty-seven days, at $4 per day, $3,748, making the sum of $4,001.48. From the papers on file it appears that these several items were, on the 25th day of May, 1854, reported on by J. J. Abert, colonel, Corps Topographical Engineers, and reduced to the sum of $3,306.48, which he found justly due.
