The Roman Catholics have resisted the reading of the Bible wherever they could. They are opposed to religion in the public schools, except the kind that comes out of the Roman Catholic catechism. The word of God read without note or comment they fear and hate. They seem to feel that the Bible is against them, and that a generation trained up in the Bible would not submit to the rule of the Roman priests, and, perhaps they are right. Intelligent Bible reading and the rule of Cardinal Gibbons and his like have never gone well together. But there is still another consideration opposed to his conclusion, and that is that however faulty the public schools may be in failing to teach religion, the people trained in these schools have so far compared very favorably with the product of the Roman Catholic parochial schools in the matter of good conduct. With all the advantages of the parochial schools, which the Cardinal thinks so important, and which must, in his estimate, be about right since he rules them, and his poor people pay so much for them, the Roman Catholics continue to turn out considerablv more than their proportion of the criminal class. He says that "Intelligence without virtue breeds the shrewdest criminals," and that is true, but the parochial schools have never demonstrated any peculiar possession of either intelligence or virtue. Bad as the godless schools may be, those trained there are full as likely to be found outside of jail as those trained in the parochial schools. It was cited at one time as a proof of the zeal of the Roman Catholic priests that of about a score of murderers hung in Pittsburg...
