Sir: I have leen most agreeably surprised to find Maitland, the pilot who so bravely towed the Juliet out of fire on the 2tith April, and again on the 27th attempted as a volunteer to carry the Champion No. 5 by the batteries, coming up river on his way to Cairo in one of our towboats. He intends to apply for leave of absence. I made a special rejxrt in his case, ancl hope that his advancement to first-class pilot from the time the Juliet entered Red River is ready to be given him.
