Has resolved to write the history of this rebellion; has written about 60 sheets, beginning from the death of King James. Gives further details of what he has written, which if it were now printed, would exceed what Daniell hath written of 12 kings; to what a Book of Martyrs will the whole volume swell. Writes with all fidelity and freedom of all he knows. Has appointed it (if finished) to be delivered after his death to Nicholas; for the King, who will not find himself flattered in it, nor irreverently handled: though the truth will better become a dead than a living man. Writes this history three hours a day. Begs for informations of all kinds. Hopes to obtain papers from London. Thanks him for kindness shewn to his wife. Is a loser by the death of Lord Essex. Will be able hereafter to write longer letters. _Takes him to task for having parted with his secretaries. Copy. Endorsed, My letter to Sec) . Nicholas." Cl. S. P. vol. ii. p. 285. 2355. Sir E. Hyde to the Lord Treasurer Oottinyton. Received yesterday his letter of the 12th (N. S.) Is now confirmed of his stay at Rouen. Reminds him of their Oriel College meetings. Thinks he should have betaken himself to the King s rather than a foreign Prince s service. Jersey, like St. Ursula s field, rejects all but honest people. Has no intention of leaving the island. Rallies him on his preference for the neighbourhood of St. Germains. Is grieved that the hopes of the King depend on French counsels. Cannot imagine why those who refuse the Covenant remain in England, unless they are of...
