I did not know that Dr. Couden had any claim to this room at all, and I knew I never found anybody in it before, and I supposed it was absolutely unoccupied, and I told Tavenner he might use this room to do his work in, typewriter work, and gave Tavenner a key to the room. I ma have given him as many as two; I would not be positive about tliat. If he had asked me for two, I would have given him two, readily. Tavenner was working in the room, and I never knew until Dr. Couden came to surrender his keys that McDermott had any claim whatever upon this room. IVhen Mr. McDermott subsequently applied to me for keys to that room, I asked his authority for using t e room and he stated Speaker Clark himself had told him he might use the room. I saw the Speaker about it and he said " Yes; he had told him the room was unoccupied," and the Speaker told him he might use it, and I then told Mr. Crandall tomake me keys for that room also, and the two bunches of keys were probably made on orders about the same time, and if he delivered them it is possible Crandall delivered all six at once.
