This is a tidal waterway 2J miles long connecting Beaufort Harbor with the waters of Core Sound. The existing project adopted by the river and harbor act of March 4, 1913, provides for a channel 5 feet deep at mean low water and 40 feet bottom width. It was completed in 1915 at a cost of $30,000, of which local interests contributed $10,000. The commerce is of a miscellaneous character, and in 1918 amounted to 36,846 tons, valued at over $2,000,000. This shows an increase of about 270 per cent since the completion of the project. There are in use on the waterway about 135 boats, some of which tax its capacity, and the present inquiry has in view increased facilities. Local interests request a channel 10 feet by 100 feet to the Carteret Lumber Co. and thence 7 feet by 75 feet. The benefit to result from the 10-foot depth would be confined to the lumber company, but a channel 7 feet by 75 feet throughout would be of material advantage to general commerce and navigation. This is recommended by the district engineer, the Board of Engineers for Rivers and Harbors, and the Chief of Engineers at an estimated cost of $30,000, and $4,000 annually for maintenance.
