Mr. Forster boasted that he " would canter over the religious difficulty," but in his adventurous horsemanship he has fallen into the meshes of Denomi- nationalism, and there he lies in a hopeless entanglement. As for us, our course is clear, and we mean to pursue it until we have obtained a national education which shall trample upon no man's conscience, and which, instead of widening and perpetuating the divisions which exist among us shall heal them, and give to our nation a unity, a power, and a happiness which it has never yet attained. (Loud applause.) The resolution was seconded in a few words by the Rev. Dr. Raleigh. Mr. Alfred Illingworth, M.P., supported the resolution. He said: Ladies and gentlemen, at this time of the night, and after the lesson whicli has been administered from this platform, it is not my intention to occupy more than two or three minutes; but, Mr. Chairman, if you and I were vindictive men, we might well say to-night that we had had our revenge. In the House of Commons we formed a small party that sought to show to the Government the danger which was ahead. Heedlessly Mr. Forster and his allies went on, and now we find the whole Nonconformist body of this country in open rebellion. (Applause.) I want only just to point out one thing which I think is on our part a practical duty. I do hope that the Nonconformists are not lookin...
