ELECTRIC RATES On account of the fact that upon its introduction for commercial purposes, electricity was regarded as a competitor of gas and also to stimulate its use for varied purposes, the rates for electric service have ten the subject of much investigation and study. The storage of electricity in large amounts is uneconomic its use for many purposes is confined to short periods during the four hours, and a large proportion of the consumers make their demands upon the system at the same time. These conditions tate all portions of the system being of sufficient capacity to taki the maximum instantaneous demand which may be imposed byf sumers. The investment in plant and equipment therefore mu great as if the full capacity was utilized throughout the twej hours, though as a matter of fact, a few hours during the em actually determine what that investment must be.
