Tolstoy described "Vi" as "one of those texts which cause an enormous impression." Many years later, American critic Edmund Wilson praised Gogol as the greatest writer of stories which are horror but deal with psychic or moral problems at the same time (comparing him with Poe, Hawthorne, and Melville) and classified "Vi "as "a vampire story, one of the most terrifying specimens of its class ever written."
