Arthrous Occurrence and Function in the Pauline Corpus - With Particular Focus on the Text of Romans (Hardcover)

This work is a study of the Greek Article in the Pauline Corpus, focusing particular attention on the letter to the Romans. The history of its development as a demonstrative and relative pronoun is traced from the Mycenaean period to its occurrence in Homer and in subsequent Greek writers. The study concludes that three simultaneous functions are consistently observed with respect to the Article above the level of the sentence: deixis (conceptualization), endophora (referentiality), and cohesion (structure). The Article is a structural and semantic signal in paragraph-level texts, conveying grammatical information and related significance from writer to reader through accepted linguistic conventions. The function of the Article is inimical to individual and authorial style.
