How everything seems to swim around him His steps are tottering, his brain is whirling, his skin is burning, his throat is parched. What does it all mean? So he who laughed at the warning finds when it is too late that the danger is real, and that delay is death. Look at him as he turns his face--alas too late--towards the camp that he has left Oh for one glance at the brazen serpent now See him as he staggers and falls to the ground in the last terrible agony of mortal disease, and the more wretched for the thought of the remedy he has spurned. That evening some travellers passing from one part of the camp of Israel to another see by the wayside the ghastly corpse of one who perished because he was in no hurry to be saved. I do not know whether any Israelite lost his life in that fashion or no, but I do know, I have strong reason to fear, that human souls are being lost in that way every day we live. They perish because they make light of their danger. They have no fault to find with the Gospel scheme, nor do they doubt God's ability and willingness to save, but there is plenty of time to think about such things.
