CHAPTER It THE IMPOBTANCE OF PERFORMING PRESENT DUTY. After you have resolved on the cultivation of your individuality, it is important that you should endeavour to do your best in the position which you occupy. It is very common for men to urge, as a plea for the unmanly part they act, and for general incompetency and uselessness, that their position is so unfavourable. They evince no energy and attain to no excellence, and it is all because of their untoward circumstances. They have not the work to which they are adapted. They have no opportunity of improvement. They have no heart to attempt anything, because when they have formed plans something or other has always occurred to thwart them. In fine, they prove themselves mere muffs; and it is all because they are out of their proper place. Only let them get into another position, and won't they do great things --won't they prove themselves fine fellows They remind one of great boys, who are always in trouble, because things are always coming in their way. One comes home with his jacket torn; but it was not he that did it, it was a nail that caught hold of it and tore it so. Another stumbles over a stone greatly to the detriment of his poor knees, and he whimpers that the stone struck his foot and he fell. And just so is it with your fullgrown, full-aged boys; they are always in trouble because the things which surround them are always getting out of joint. Their position is not suited to them at all.
