FT BOOK OF THE MONTH 'A wondrous book' - Alain de Botton 'A wholly

Age Smash your targets * Annihilate the competition * Choose your
battles Have you ever wondered why we use metaphors derived from
war and conflict so often at work? What impact does that have on
how we conduct business, our culture, our stress levels and
ultimately our ability to succeed? For too long war has cast a
spell on how we think about business, with negative implications
for us, the companies we work in and on the planet. Drawing on the
philosophy of Wing Tsun, an ancient Chinese martial art based on
the idea that fighting is fundamentally bad, John Vincent and
Julian Hitch challenge some of our deepest-held assumptions and
show us how to unlearn many ideas and behaviours that are
preventing our personal and professional growth. Instead of
embracing force as the long accepted route to success, Winning Not
Fighting offers as a transformational guide to work and life by
inspiring positivity, simplicity and focus. "Unites business and
martial arts in a realistic, practical and intelligent way. It's
capitalism, but not as we know it." - Benjamin Zephaniah

This unique book reveals the existence of an advanced civilization
where none was known before, presenting an entirely new perspective
on the culture and history of Tibet. In his groundbreaking study of
an epic period in Tibet few people even knew existed, John Vincent
Bellezza details the discovery of an ancient people on the most
desolate reaches of the Tibetan plateau, revolutionizing our ideas
about who Tibetans really are. While many associate Tibet with
Buddhism, it was also once a land of warriors and chariots, whose
burials included megalithic arrays and golden masks. This first
Tibetan civilization, known as Zhang Zhung, was a cosmopolitan one
with links extending across Eurasia, bringing it in line with many
of the major cultural innovations of the Late Bronze Age and Iron
Age. Based on decades of research, The Dawn of Tibet draws on a
rich trove of archaeological, textual, and ethnographic materials
collected and analyzed by the author. Bellezza describes the vast
network of castles, temples, megaliths, necropolises, and rock art
established on the highest and now depopulated part of the Tibetan
plateau. He relates literary tales of priests and priestesses,
horned deities, and the celestial afterlife to the actual
archaeological evidence, providing a fascinating perspective on the
origins and development of civilization. The story builds to the
present by following the colorful culture of the herders of Upper
Tibet, an ancient people whose way of life is endangered by modern
development. Tracing Bellezza's epic journeys across lands where
few Westerners have ventured, this book provides a compelling
window into the most inaccessible reaches of Tibet and a
civilization that flourished long before Buddhism took root.
Edward Henry Stanley (1826-93) was a prominent British politician
and a major landowner. His diaries provide interesting insights
into the running of a Lancashire country house and the day-to-day
life of a powerful aristocrat, as well as Gladstone's government.
This book contains a selection from the diaries of Edward Henry
Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby, from the years between September 1869
and March 1878. The Diaries are a rich source for the politics of
the 1870s covering much of the period of opposition to Gladstone's
First Ministry and Derby's pivotal role in Disraeli's Second
Ministry. This is also a central text for understanding Disraeli's
personality and the Eastern Question. Professor Vincent's edition
will be widely welcomed by all those interested in Victorian
politics.
Chromium exists in nature as complexes of two stable oxidation
states - trivalent chromium(III) and hexavalent chromium(VI).
Although trivalent chromium is required in trace amounts for sugar
and lipid metabolism in humans and its deficiency may cause a
disease called chromium deficiency; hexavalent chromium is toxic
and carcinogenic. As chromium compounds were used in dyes and
paints and the tanning of leather, these compounds are often found
in soil and groundwater at abandoned industrial sites, now needing
environmental cleanup and remediation.
"The Bioinorganic Chemistry of Chromium: From Biochemistry to
Environmental Toxicology" takes a critical look at what the
biochemical data indicate about chromium's role in the body and the
biological mechanisms of its toxicology. Topics covered include:
What do we know about the biochemical roles and mechanisms of
chromium? Is chromium an essential element in the mammalian diet?Is
chromium(III) effective as a nutraceutical, a therapeutic agent,
and as a supplement in animal feed? What is the biochemistry behind
the toxicology of chromium(III) and chromium(VI): the mechanisms of
metabolism, genetic and epigenetic effects, and disruption of cell
signalling? What are the current chromium(VI) policies and positions
from regulatory agencies?
"The Bioinorganic Chemistry of Chromium: From Biochemistry to
Environmental Toxicology" is an important contribution to the
bioinorganic and trace element biochemical fields which will find a
place on the bookshelves of bioinorganic chemists, biochemists,
inorganic chemists, toxicologists, nutritionists and regulatory
affairs professionals.
