Due to parallel advances in signal processing and computer hardware
in the last 15 years, quantitative ultrasound techniques have
reached maturity, allowing for the construction of quantitative
maps or images of soft tissues. This book will focus on 5 modern
research topics related to quantitative ultrasound of soft tissues:
- Spectral-based methods for tissue characterization, tissue
typing, cancer detection, etc.; - Envelope statistics analysis as a
means of quantifying and imaging tissue properties; - Ultrasound
elastography for quantifying elastic properties of tissues (several
clinical ultrasound scanners now display elastography images); -
Scanning acoustic microscopy for forming images of mechanical
properties of soft tissues with micron resolution (desktop size
scanners are now available); and - Ultrasound computer tomography
for breast cancer imaging (new ultrasound tomography systems have
been developed and are currently under evaluation clinically).

Kolnischen Zeitung schrieben in diesem Zeitraum u.a. G.R. Hocke,
G.F. Hering, E. Johann, K.H. Ruppel, H.H. Stuckenschmidt, H.

In Animal Rationality: Later Medieval Theories 1250-1350, Anselm
Oelze offers the first comprehensive and systematic exploration of
theories of animal rationality in the later Middle Ages.
Traditionally, it was held that medieval thinkers ascribed
rationality to humans while denying it to nonhuman animals. As
Oelze shows, this narrative fails to capture the depth and
diversity of the medieval debate. Although many thinkers, from
Albert the Great to John Buridan, did indeed hold that nonhuman
animals lack rational faculties, some granted them the ability to
engage in certain rational processes such as judging, reasoning, or
employing prudence. There is thus a whole spectrum of positions to
be discovered, many of which show interesting parallels with
contemporary theories of animal rationality.
The rediscovery of the works of the Galician writer Soma
Morgenstern only took place after his death. They are marked by the
quest for identity embarked on by Jewish intellectuals in the 20th
century. Exiled in America after the Shoah, Morgenstern turned away
from Christian Europe, attributing to it the religious blame for
the Holocaust. "Die BlutsAule" is, however, written in
idiosyncratic German, with many reminiscences of the language of
the Bible. Given that this was also the language of the 'hated'
perpetrators of the Holocaust, the complexion of the novel is
intricate indeed. The study reconstructs its religious, historical,
and literary background.
