The Wonder Of You presents the iconic artist’s unmistakable voice and most dramatic original performances augmented with lush new orchestral accompaniment.
Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London with acclaimed producers Don Reedman and Nick Patrick, the album spans a variety of musical styles that Elvis embraced, from rock and gospel to country and ballads.
Featuring beloved Presley classics along with several surprises, standout tracks include a sultry new version of “A Big Hunk O’ Love,” the glorious “Amazing Grace,” the heartfelt emotion of “Kentucky Rain” and a stunning new take on the classic “Always On My Mind.”
Waar het alles so verkeerd gegaan? Sy het haar voorgeneem om nie
soos Ma koud en afsydig teenoor haar man te wees nie. Om te veg vir
haar huwelik. Ma het in die huwelik gebly in liggaam maar haar gees
was nie daar nie. Sy was nog heeltyd in liggaam en gees daar. Sy
het alles gegee, altyd die vrede probeer bewaar, nooit die appelkar
omgegooi nie. Hoekom is dit dan dat sy nie haar man kon hou nie? In
hierdie aangrypende roman word pertinente vrae gevra: Waarom bly
ons lojaal tot die mense vir wie ons lief is? Is daar 'n “reg” en
“verkeerd” in verhoudings?
alkoholis. Meer spesifiek die kind van 'n alkoholis. Die boek beeld
die progressiewe stadia van alkoholisme uit. Waar die alkoholis net
as 'n sosiale drinker begin en opeindig as 'n aggressiewe
dronkaard.
An American institution, Sun Records has a history with many
chapters -- its Memphis origins with visionary Sam Phillips, the
breakthrough recordings of Elvis Presley, and the studio's immense
influence on the sound of popular music. But behind the company's
chart toppers and legendary musicians there exists another story,
told by Barbara Barnes Sims. In the male-dominated workforce of the
1950s, 24-year-old Sims found herself thriving in the demanding
roles of publicist and sales promotion coordinator at Sun Records.
Sims's job placed her in the studio with Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison,
Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, Carl Perkins, and other Sun
entertainers, as well as the unforgettable Phillips, whose work
made the music that defined an era. The Next Elvis: Searching for
Stardom at Sun Records chronicles Sims's career at the studio, a
pivotal time at this recording mecca, as she darted from disc
jockeys to distributors. Sims not only entertains with personal
stories of big personalities, but also brings humor to the
challenges of a young woman working in a fast and tough industry.
Her disarming narrative ranges from descriptions of a disgraced
Jerry Lee Lewis to the remarkable impact and tragic fall of DJ
Daddy-O Dewey to the frenzied Memphis homecoming of Elvis after his
military service. Collectively, these vignettes offer a rare and
intimate look at the people, the city, and the studio that
permanently shifted the trajectory of rock 'n' roll.
Collection of six classic films starring Elvis Presley. In
'Jailhouse Rock' (1957) Presley plays Vince Everett, a youngster
sent to prison for accidentally killing a man. While behind bars he
takes up music and learns to be a rock and roll singer. Eventually
he attracts the attention of a beautiful record company talent
scout (Judy Tyler) and the path to fame appears before him. 'Viva
Las Vegas' (1963) operates as a celebration of the gambling capital
of America. Presley plays Lucky Jackson, a racing driver who finds
that he can't keep his mind on the Las Vegas Grand Prix after he
meets a sexy swimming instructor, Rusty Martin (Ann-Margret). Lucky
must fend off Count Elmo Mancini (Cesare Danova), who also has his
eye on grand prix victory and Rusty. In 'Spinout' (1966)
freewheeling singer and racing driver Mike McCoy (Presley) has
three beautiful women competing to get him down the aisle. Cynthia
Foxhugh (Shelley Fabares) is a spoiled rich kid used to getting her
own way, Les (Deborah Walley) is a drummer who believes her musical
inclinations may win McCoy's heart and Diana (Diane McBain) is an
author seeking out the perfect man. She believes she has found him,
but McCoy's determination to drive an experimental new car in a
race poses a danger to the plans of all three women. In 'Speedway'
(1968) racing driver Steve Grayson (Presley) owes a debt to the US
government of $145,000. He decides that the only way to pay the
bill is to win the Charlotte 500 race and enters, determined to
triumph and to win the heart of IRS agent Susan Jack (Nancy
Sinatra) in the process. In 'It Happened at the World's Fair'
(1962) the livelihood of crop dusters Mike (Presley) and Danny
(Gary Lockwood) is stolen away from them when a sheriff impounds
their plane because of Danny's gambling debts. The pair head to the
World's Fair in Seattle, where Danny tries to earn the money back
playing poker and Mike ends up looking after a little girl, Sue-Lin
(Vicky Tiu). Finally, 'Harum Scarum' (1965) features Presley as
action movie star Johnny Tyrone, whose real life becomes
adventurous when he is drugged and kidnapped by underground
assassins while on a goodwill tour of the Middle East. The
assassins have seen Johnny's films and want to employ him to carry
out the assassination of a desert king for them. Naturally, Johnny
refuses and attempts a daring escape across the desert in the
company of the beautiful Princess Shalimar (Mary Ann Mobley).

Hawaiian ways and is accepted as a regular part of the family.
However, with representatives of Stitch's home planet following hot
on his heels, it is unclear how long this happy situation can last.
What was it like to be Elvis Presley? What did it feel like when
impossible fame made him its prisoner? As the world's first rock
star there was no one to tell him what to expect, no one with whom
he could share the burden of being himself - of being Elvis. On the
outside he was all charm, sex appeal, outrageously confident on
stage and stunningly gifted in the recording studio. To his fans he
seemed to have it all. He was Elvis. With his voice and style
influencing succeeding generations of musicians, he should have
been free to sing any song he liked, to star in any film he was
offered, and to tour in any country he chose. But he wasn't free.
The circumstances of his poor beginnings in the American South,
which, as he blended gospel music with black rhythm and blues and
white country songs, helped him create rock and roll, had left him
with a lifelong vulnerability. Made rich and famous beyond his
wildest imaginings when he mortgaged his talent to the machinations
of his manager, 'Colonel' Tom Parker, there would be an inevitable
price to pay. Though he daydreamed of becoming a serious film
actor, instead he grew to despise his own movies and many of the
songs he had to sing in them. He could have rebelled. But he
didn't. Why? In the Seventies, as the hits rolled in again, and
millions of fans saw him in a second career as he sang his way
across America, he talked of wanting to tour the world. But he
never did. What was stopping him? BEING ELVIS takes a clear-eyed
look at the most-loved entertainer ever, and finds an unusual boy
with a dazzling talent who grew up to change popular culture; a man
who sold a billion records and had more hits than any other singer,
but who became trapped by his own frailties in the loneliness of
fame.
While ballads have been a cornerstone of popular music for decades,
this is the first book to explore the history and appeal of these
treasured songs. David Metzer investigates how and why the styles
of ballads have changed over a period of more than seventy years,
offering a definition of the genre and discussing the influences of
celebrated performers including Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, and
Whitney Houston. The emotional power of the ballad is strongly
linked to the popular mood of the time, and consequently songs can
tell us much about how events and emotions were felt and understood
in wider culture at specific moments of recent American history.
Tracing both the emotional and stylistic developments of the genre
from the 1950s to the present day, this lively and engaging volume
is as much a musical history as it is a history of emotional life
in America.
It was his most electric and influential time as a live performer.
The young and hungry Elvis, the rising star, burst onto stages
large and small-sexy, controversial, brimming with talent and
ambition. One lightning-hot year in Florida fueled his rise from
novelty act to headlining megastar. Elvis Ignited follows the
immensely talented musician through his tour of Florida in
1955-1956, where he played more concerts than in any other state in
the country and where he first became the object of worship, scorn,
and controversy. Bob Kealing interviews people who saw the King up
close in high school gymnasiums, nightclubs, radio stations, and
shopping centers, recalling the time-stands-still memories of
hearing his hit songs for the first time and the shrieks of young
fans at the sight of the young rockabilly god. Struck by a new kind
of music and performances so different from anything they had known
before, Floridians saw how special Elvis was before the rest of the
world caught on. Kealing continues the story through Elvis's years
in the army and the filming of Follow that Dream in Florida in
1961. Elvis's rise to fame in the Sunshine State was a turning
point in American music history. It was the arrival of rock and
roll.
Double bill of stand up performances from Liverpudlian comic and TV
star John Bishop. In 'The Elvis Has Left the Building Tour',
recorded in 2010 at The Liverpool Empire, he shares his thoughts on
middle-age, male grooming, football and more. In 'The Sunshine
Tour', taken from his show at Liverpool's Echo Arena in 2011, he
reflects on his new-found fame and discusses what his children make
of him.
The Little Book of Elvis Presley is a superb collection of
quotations by and about the man regarded as one of the most
significant cultural icons of the twentieth century. A perfect
companion for Elvis fans everywhere, this book of bite-sized quips
helps capture exactly what made the The King of Rock 'n' Roll so
special. From insightful quotes by fellow artists, collaborators
and friends, to words of wit and wisdom from Elvis himself, you'll
find more than 170 amusing and inspiring soundbites inside. 'I
figure all any kid needs is hope and the feeling he or she belongs.
If I could do or say anything that would give some kid that
feeling, I would believe I had contributed something to the world.'
Elvis Presley.
Sitting by her window with a glass of cranberries in sugar syrup
bought from a woman in the market who assured her they came from
Karelia, she muses "Perhaps they have some other kind of effect
when you eat them. Spiritual maybe? So I eat and wait for the
Karelian cranberries to work their magic on me." Skarynkina is
impelled to spend the last of her money on a trip to Krakow to meet
Czeslaw Milosz but never finds his address, so he remains to her an
idol like Elvis Presley dressed in gold lame. Each story has a
charm and imaginative flight of its own.
The achievements of Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly have been
extensively documented, but until now little if anything has been
known about the many ways in which their lives were interconnected.
For the first time anywhere, rock & roll expert Alan Mann takes
a detailed look at each artist's early years, comparing their
backgrounds and influences, chronicling all their meetings and
examining the many amazing parallels in their lives, careers and
tragic deaths. Contains many rare and previously unpublished
photographs. A fascinating, thought-provoking insight into two of
the greatest popular musical figures of the Twentieth Century.

In 1958 Edna Buxton (Ileana Douglas) wins a songwriting
competition, and although her prize of a New York recording
contract proves to be a con, she changes her name to Denise Waverly
and turns professional. In the 1960s she works for publisher Joel
Millner (John Turturro), and marries songwriting partner Howard
Caszatt (Eric Stoltz). When he is unfaithful, Edna turns to rock
producer Jay Phillips (Matt Dillon), but all the while Edna strives
for success as a singer in her own right. Loosely based on the life
of Carole King, with original songs in period style supplied by the
likes of Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello.

Perhaps more relevant than ever before, Rob Bell's Velvet Elvis is
his original and bestselling classic. In Velvet Elvis, Bell invites
readers to wrestle with their faith, and offers a radical new
perspective on Jesus, the church, and Christianity today. We know
there's something more. We sense it, we feel it, and we want it.
But how do we find it - a spirituality that stands up to the
questions of an honest, searching mind? 'This book is for those who
need a fresh take on Jesus and what it means for us to live the
kind of life he teaches us to live,' writes Rob Bell. This new
edition of Velvet Elvis, along with the relaunch of Rob Bell's
three other classic works, offers what Rob does best: original and
refreshingly personal perspectives on what Christianity is really
about. 'We have to test everything,' writes Bell. 'Do that to this
book. Don't swallow it uncritically. Think about it. Wrestle with
it. Just because I'm a Christian and I'm trying to articulate a
Christian worldview doesn't mean I've got it nailed. I'm
contributing to the discussion. God has spoken, and the rest is
commentary, right?'
"He wasn't dead and gone to Heaven. He was alive and still in
Graceland. Cursed to live another year on God's earth as Elvis
Presley. The man from yesterday trapped in a today of tomorrows..."
As 1968 dawns, the once King of Rock 'n' Roll faces cultural
oblivion. While elsewhere the Sixties are swinging, for Elvis
they're sinking - in terrible films, drug addiction, paranoia,
religious mania and the mercenary wiles of his psychopathic
manager. At 33 the legend who once had it all is lost, lonely and
slowly going insane. Until thrown a last lifeline. His own one-hour
TV special: a do-or-die final chance to remind the world who, and
what, Elvis Presley really is. The Comeback plots the incredible
true story of Elvis' fall and rise from Army discharge to iconic
black leather resurrection. Simon Goddard takes the reader inside
the life, music and mind of Elvis: a 24/7 delirium of women, pills,
midnight movies and holy mumbo jumbo, isolated from an America
unravelling in its own Sixties chaos of war, racism, riots and
assassinations, until his world and theirs collide in the greatest
performance of his life. A genre-busting modernist rock 'n' roll
fable unlike any music biography you've ever read, The Comeback is
the definitive account of how it took Elvis eight years on the big
screen to lose his crown - but just one magical hour on a small one
to win it back.
